The second day of infamy

Since pretty much everyone in the world with access to the mass media knows what happened yesterday, I won't go back over it. Instead I'm going to past exerpts from my email correspondence.

Becca,

You aren't going to believe this... Three separate planes just struck both world trade center towers (the south one is now gone), and the pentagone. Take care.

This is going to be one of those, where were you when things.

Karen

P.S. I'm shaking

Becca,

Its SO bad! The entire southern half of Manhatten looks like a bad version of independence day. It is totally covered with smoke and rubble. I have a feeling that the second tower is about to come down.

They flew either one or two 737s into each (these planes were fully loaded) and then they think (haven't been able to confirm despiet the restricted airspace) it was also a plane. The white house, pentagon, statedepartment, are all evacuated. I can only imagine this is what people must have felt like when they heard about pearl harbor. Only we don't (the public) know who is claiming responsibility. But they figured it out, they knew that Air traffic was our biggest weakness. My guess is that from now on, bullet proof cockpits and the cockpit door will always remain closed. Dear God. Do you have any idea how many people have just been killed?

I'll try to keep you informed.

Becca,

Yep, the other one just came down. The first plane was an american airlines 737, then a second 757 flew into both world trade center towers.

To add good news there is another unconfirmed report that another plane has heen hijacked and is headed toward the pentagon. I can only assume that they have scrambled some fighters to cover washington (this is just my guess). AF1 is on its way back with fighter escort to DC.

Bush said, "THis is a difficult moment for America." He called it a national crisis (duh) Its just unimaginiable. The press is calling it the first act of war. Although it is an accurate statment I can only imagine that it isn't going to help anything.

OF course when the second building went we probably lost about half of the emergency workers.

More later,

Karen

Oh my god. 50,000 people work in the World Trade Center. I wonder who did it... an act of war is just what Bush is looking for to create his legacy, unfortunately, terrorists are hard to pin down. I expect and hope we retaliate, just against the right people. That's the problem with terrorism, it only takes a few, not expensive, doesn't need goverment support. This is something that missile defense can never prevent.

I can't believe that a plane actually got to the pentagon. Prohibited airspace should be better protected, shoot down on site.

This is just terrible. One of my co-workers is going home tomorrow (San Francisco), his 9 year old daughter called crying to say "you aren't flying through NY, are you?"

9/11/2001 9:53:30 AM

Becca,

He's not going to NY tomorrow. Right now they are diverting all trans-atlantic traffic to canada. I don't know how long it will take them to re-open it.

Oh, great the CIA had been evacuated. I've already left a message with Heather.

Let me just explain, all air traffic has been shut down in this country. ALL planes. They are flying air cover (with F-16s over DC). NY has come to a grinding hault!! The subway has even been shut down. My dad just called and said that they think that as many as 4 more planes are up in the air, but not under a US pilot control. There is a report that a 767 has crashed outside of Pitsburg (maybe the pilot won).

The news just keeps getting worse.

Dear All

We are watching events here in the UK and are stunned. I just wanted you all to know that Lisa and I are thinking of you.
