Last Summer Bank Holiday

Yep, that's right Karen's all alone at work again. Not to worry I'd still be here alone at this time of the morning even if it wasn't a bank holiday. And also take heart that I don't intend to work all day. This afternoon I'm going in search of Claydon House, the house that was used in the film Emma, adapted from a Jane Austen novel. Unfortunately it seems that none of the fine weather featured in the film will be accompaning me.

Today is the British equivalent of Labor Day, and I'm guessing the unofficial end of summer, and it seems as if summer has left us for good. It is supposed to hit 70 degrees today, but I'm not very hopeful. I will soon be delving back into my winter wardrobe, which I managed to shelve for half of July and most of August. Not too bad. I'm hopeful that some of the cold weather will thicken up my blood, but at a year out, it's not looking promising folks.

One more thing. The freshman issue of the Technique came out online today. I was enjoying reading the 99 things to do before graduating, when I got to number 22. Now I don't know if this was there last year or not, but I was tickled. Becca, Jen and I have now been imortalized in the Technique for livening up Fraternity Rusy. For those of you I haven't told, the story goes something like this:

Becca, Jen, and I decided to go to Frat rush, because we had been told by everyone what a great time it was. So off we went. After visiting about four houses, we had begun to notice a patter to our conversations. We would be asked our names, majors, and home towns. Now seeing as we had rather plain names, were all studying AE, and came from either Florida or Virginia, the conversations were pretty uneventful, and seemed to stop there. Not that we really blamed the Frat guys/houses. They weren't really interested in girls anyway, as it was rush week. In theory they wanted us around, but that week it was mostly to attract possible plegees.

We weren't having much fun, and my theory was it was because we weren't interesting enough. It was hard to change our names or majors, but we could liven up where we came from. We concocted a plan to tell the next house that we were all from Enu, Alaska, a tiny island in the Allusians. It was easy enough to adopt our families to match, and the rest we just went with the flow. Why GT? Well, not many people live on Enu, and since we wanted to study AE, we got a brochure on GT and decided to come down where it was warm.

At the next house we put it into practice, and it worked like a charm. We got the grand tour, and up and down the halls ran whispers, hey have you met the girls from Alaska? We must have met the entire house, and just as we were about to leave, one of the more senior guys came in hauling something for the night's festivities. Again the call went out from our two escorts, I'd like you to meet the girls from Alaska. At this point he began to laugh and asked us if we were serious. Well since he was laughing, it didn't take long for us to brake down into hysterics. We left in stiches. We never went back to that Frat, but the story lives on.
